We start this week with Andrze's superb in-your-face image of the immaculate P-51D, Excalibur, displaying under the leaden skies during the Pardubice Airshow 2013 in the Czech Republic.

Canon EOS 1Dx + Canon EF 500mm ƒ4 L IS lens & Canon 1.4x TCThe Shoreham Airshow is one of the best shows on the UK circuit and Paul was on hand to capture the Red Bull Matadors Xtreme Air Sbach 300s during their display during the 2013 show.

Canon EOS 50D + Canon EF 400mm ƒ5.6 L lensThe good thing with the forum is that we get contributions from all over the world. Antonio posted this great photo of Tango 1, an Argentine Air Force Boeing 757-200 taken at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport during the CELAC UE summit in Santiago de Chile.

Canon T3 + Canon EF 75-300mm lensThe second Bahrain International Airshow certainly had some standout moments, with the US Military having a large number of assets on show. Jurgen took the opportunity to capture this striking night time photo under the lights of a USMC UH-1Y Huey Venom and US Navy MH-53E Sea Dragon.

One from the recent archives, Dan's been trawling through his previously unseen photos in order to test the new 1200px resolution on our forums. This excellent photo of the 2012 RAF Display Hawk was taken during that year's Autumn Airshow at IWM Duxford.

Canon EOS 20D + Canon EF 100-400mm L IS lensTo round up this weeks POTW, Martin captured this beautiful land locked Swiss Airforce F-5E Tiger II in the late afternoon light at Sion returning from its CAP mission during World Economic Forum (WEF).

We start with a stunning image of a Bristow Helicopters EC225, and in contrast to other helicopter nightshots this wasn't taken at RAF Northolt! Mark was one of a small group who had the chance to photograph Bond's operations at Aberdeen airport and came away with a set of brilliant images in difficult conditions.

We're massive fans on the B-1B Lancer here at UKAR and are pleased to see the USAF demonstrating it in the air at the recent Dubai & Bahrain airshows. Peter Steehouwer captured this dynamic image of the bone in full afterburner and showing off some topside in Bahrain, check out the rest of his tread for more action from the airshow including the Russian Knights!

This Alouette III was painted in a special scheme in 2005 to celebrate 300,000 flying hours and is now displayed in a local aircraft museum. With the Alouette III being retired from service across Europe in the coming years, we hope to see some examples at UK airshows in 2014!

A likely participant at Farnborough Airshow in 2014 will be the new Airbus A350, which is currently still undergoing flight testing at Toulouse. Clement captured the new airliner departing on a test flight in some difficult weather but still managed to take this excellent image.

This week saw the 40th Anniversary of the F-16 Fighting Falcon and we asked our UKAR members to post their favourite 'Viper' images to commemorate this. Rob's shot of a Portuguese F-16AM departing from Cambrai during a NATO Tiger Meet captured our eye due to the use of a slow shutter speed, adding movement into the image. Check out the rest of the images posted in our F-16 tribute thread HERE.

We're massive fans of the F-4 Phantom here on UKAR and this image was posted in our 'Golden Oldies' section by Ian Bowskill. The image was taken soon after 92 Squadron formed on the Phantom in 1977 and is flown in this image by the OC of the squadron, Wing Commander 'Black' Ferguson.

Kicking of this week's Photo of the Week selection is this stunning air to air image of a F-16C from the 310th Fighter Squadron over the Grand Canyon. Special permission was granted to the squadron to fly low over the iconic Arizona landmarks for Erik Roelofs to capture these images of the Viper in action.

The Luftwaffe's F-4 Phantom fleet may be gone, but their memory lives on with the thousands of excellent images captured of their retirement schemes during June 2012. We liked Hartmut's shot of '38+10' in the retro camouflage scheme for its low angle and clean background of trees.

The AH-64 Apache may be a common sight in Europe, but they certainly look much meatier in camouflage like this Japanese example. Captured during the New Years demonstration of the JGSDF at Narshino training ground.

We always enjoy seeing Antonio's images from Chile, and his set of the FIFA World Cup trophy beginning it's world tour is no exception to this. The brightly coloured MD-83 is seen here arriving at Santiago and we look forward to the aircraft visiting the UK in March.

“Dave” is like marmite, you either love the F-35 or hate the F-35. The prospect of shooting the F-35B is UK skies in the next few years is warming our hearts towards the aircraft, and seeing images like this helps too. This F-35C was captured at NAS Fort Worth by DaVe Chng and is actually the 100th F-35C to be delivered to the US Navy.

With the Tristar retiring from RAF service in March 2014, opportunities to capture the majestic tanker are now limited. Kevin Hudson captured this stunning image of ZE704 on approach to RAF Mildenhall during sunset, with the golden light illuminating the aircraft perfectly.

After the recent tragedy, it was a pleasing sight to see things getting back to normal at Lakenheath with Jolly 11 returning to the skies. Luckily, one of our regular contributors was on hand to catch them back in action.

Week 1, January 2014

Kicking off the first Photo of the Week selection in 2014 is UKAR favourite 'Hesja' with this stunning capture of a Sukhoi SU-27 Flanker, performing on the final day at MAKS. The aircraft is captured perfectly pulling an astonishing cloud of vapour and the whole set of images shows why we at UKAR are such huge fans of this photographer, perfect shooting and brilliant post processing.

Nikon D800 & Nikkor 500mm lensA slightly different angle next, from new forum member Paul Heasman. Being a a QFI on 4(R) Squadron at RAF Valley is a pretty good office to have and this "Cockpit Selfie" is one of his many images taken from the Hawk T2. The rest of his thread contains air-to-air images of both RAF Hawk T1 & T2 aircraft as well as a few others, however we chose this shot for its originality and the fact everyone dreams of being a jet pilot really!

Canon EOS 40D + Sigma 10-20mm lensOur only airliner featured this week comes in the form of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Polish flag carrier LOT. This image was taken at LOT's hub at Warsaw Chopin airport and features 'Romeo Bravo' speeding along the runway, departing for Chicago O'Hare. The motion blur gives this image a real sense of speed and excitement, and even though airliners might not be everyones thing, the Dreamliner should be considered a pretty bird.

Canon EOS 450D + Canon EF 100-400mm L IS lensEdwards AFB is a base many photographers dream of getting access too, and Andy Evans visited in January 2013 (full report coming soon). With most of the Edwards based test fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft already painted into the new 'Have Glass' darker grey paint scheme, Andy was lucky to capture this F-16D in an original grey scheme, though they're certinaly not as pretty as the old white and orange painted examples!

Nikon D300S + Sigma 50-500mm OS lensSpeaking of nicely painted aircraft, our next choosen image features an Tornado GR1 in the classic RAF green/grey camouflage. This example of the mighty 'Tonka' was operated by the legendary 617 Squadron and is seen 20 years ago, at the 1993 RAF Brize Norton Photocall.

Nikon F601Continuing our camouflage theme, but with a modern twist, is this Eurocopter AS532 Cougar. Captured on an air-to-air photo sortie with the Spanish Army, Cristian used the green background of a woodland area near Sevilla as a brilliant background, with the rotor blur creating a sense of movement. Check out the rest of his thread, for more images of his rarely seen helicopters in action.

Canon EOS 1D MkIV + Canon 70-200mm ƒ2.8 L IS lensRounding of this weeks selection is another image featuring Spanish Military aircraft, this time a pair of EF-18A Hornets. When UKAR Staff Member Peter Reoch visited Lanzarote on holiday he didn't expect to be seeing any fest-jet action, but luckily for him a fourship of Hornets from 462 Escuadrón based nearby at Gran Canaria were visiting Lanzarote. This image captures the first pair taxying onto the runway ready for departure with the rocky Canary landscape in the background.
